Our Charitable Mission

Charitable Objects: To promote for public benefit, the amateur sport of Cornish pilot gig rowing in Penzance and Newlyn and the surrounding area in the County of Cornwall.

As a registered charity (#1212207), we are committed to making this traditional Cornish sport accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, or ability. We believe in the power of community, teamwork, and the therapeutic benefits of being on the water.

Our Story

Founding Vision

In 2022, Julie Saville founded the Penzance And Newlyn Pilot Gig Club with a clear vision: to create a welcoming rowing community where people of all backgrounds could experience the joy of Cornish pilot gig rowing. Her passion for inclusivity and community spirit became the foundation of our club.

Julie Saville Memorial

Following Julie's passing in 2024, our club community came together to honor her legacy. Through a successful fundraising campaign, we acquired a new gig boat, which we proudly named in her memory. This vessel represents her enduring spirit and dedication to making gig rowing accessible to all.

What is Pilot Gig Rowing?

Pilot gigs are traditional Cornish rowing boats that were historically used to ferry maritime pilots to and from incoming vessels. Today, gig rowing has evolved into a competitive sport while maintaining its rich heritage. These beautiful wooden boats are typically crewed by six rowers and a cox, working together in perfect harmony with the sea.
